In 1867 he rested at the foot of the White Tank Mountains and looked over the dry river valley below him. "Ah! Ha! This would be great land to cultivate and farm, Jack thought to himself."
He quickly began having a serious of canals built which followed the ancient Native American system.
Before Phoenix was named Phoenix, this area was called Pumpkinville. You may be thinking to yourself what a strange name for such a dry, hot place, but at the time they were large pumpkins flourishing in the fields along side of the canals, hence, "Pumpkinville".
The name Phoenix was later given by Phillip Darrell Duppa, who liked to refer to himself as Lord Duppa. He was a young chap that had moved from England to attended college at Cambridge University. He then moved out to Prescott, Arizona for prospecting goals. He thought it would be clever to call this new community "Phoenix" since the new city had risen from the ruins of a former civilization.
Phoenix was officially recognized as a town on May 4, 1868 by the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors.
The first post office was established June 15, 1868 with Jack Swilling as postmaster.
Phoenix is known as a spectacular winter vacation destination with mild temperatures, rare, if ever, snowfall and bright blue skies.
