There are two types of safety glass used in vehicles, laminated and tempered.
Laminated Safety Glass: Our windshields are made of laminated safety glass. Laminated safety glass consist of three layers; two outer layers are glass and an inner layer of plastic, polyvinyl butyral (PVB) resin. The lamination holds the glass together even after the glass is broken. The inner laminate is so strong that it will prevent most objects from penetrating the windshield. This safety feature keeps road debris out and occupants inside. Laminated glass is stronger and can withstand more impact. When laminated glass is broken, the fragments will stick upon interlayer and will not scatter like tempered glass.
Tempered Safety Glass: Side and rear windows on vehicles are made of tempered glass; tempered glass is made by heating glass then, suddenly chilling the glass with jets of cold air, which distributes compression stress on the glass surface as well as tensile stress in the center. The counteraction of compression stress and tensile stress is tempering. Tempered glass is approximately 15 times the strength of normal glass. A second safety feature of tempered glass is that it brakes into hundreds of tiny pieces preventing serious injury large shards of glass can cause.
