The beginning of the city as we know it today began in the 1600s with the arrival of 17th Century
Spanish missionaries. Upon their arrival they came across a Native American community living on the banks of the Yanaguana River. They discovered this river on the feast day of Saint Anthony and so the river that runs through the city was renamed the San Antonio River, ultimately lending the name to the city.
The Catholic church established several missions along the banks of the River to assist in the conversion of the Native people to Catholicism. The Alamo, of course, is one of the more well known missions.
San Antonio is also well known for it's beautiful, lush River Walk with plenty of restaurants, bars and hotels to accommodate any family, group of friends or individuals from the many businesses that hold conventions in San Antonio!
